The Book of Mirrors vs. The Book of Shadows: Understanding the Difference

The Book of Mirrors vs. The Book of Shadows: Understanding the Difference

While browsing the internet, I’ve noticed there’s very little information available on the Book of Mirrors (BOM). Many people seem to confuse the Book of Shadows (BOS) with the Book of Mirrors, often blending the two together in discussions or videos. As a solitary witch, I believe it’s important to make a clear distinction between the two.
In my opinion, the Book of Shadows is more of a practical tool—a collection of spells, recipes, correspondences, and information that can be used during rituals, especially if you haven’t memorised everything or need to gather ingredients for an incense blend, devotion, or other spiritual work. On the other hand, the Book of Mirrors is much more personal. It’s where you reflect on your spiritual progress over time. For me, I often revisit my BOM during Samhain, using it to review the year gone by, compare it to previous years, and assess where and how I’ve changed. It allows me to reflect more deeply and prepare for the Pagan new year.
Some people invest in a leather-bound BOS to enhance their connection with their practice, and while that’s wonderful, I consider myself a “broke witch” who can’t quite afford those luxuries. But remember, it’s not about the aesthetics; it’s about the meaning you bring to your work.
What to Write in Your Book of Mirrors?
In your Book of Mirrors, you write what feels right to you. However, for those of us who may need a little guidance at the beginning, here’s a list of what you could include. This isn’t a strict template, just an idea to spark your creativity until that magical inspiration takes hold:
  • Lunar Phases
  • Supernatural Experiences
  • Meditations and the feelings they bring
  • Spiritual Practices
  • Dreams and their interpretations
  • Signs and Omens
  • Personal Divinations (Note: I don’t consider it ethical to include other people’s tarot readings if you’re reading for others.)
  • Daily, Weekly, or Monthly Reflections
  • Recurring Numbers
  • Dreams in general
  • Prophetic Dreams
  • Sensations or Intuitive Feelings
  • Health Updates
  • Emotional State
  • Mood
What you’ve done to enhance your magical studies
  • Astrological Information
Again, this is just a guideline—your Book of Mirrors is yours alone, and you have the power to choose what goes into it. If there’s anything else you’d like to add, feel free to do so because it’s your spiritual journey, not anyone else’s.
